Family Fall Photos – Tips for the Perfect Autumn Session
Published September 2025 · St. Joseph & Kansas City
Fall is the perfect season for family portraits—warm colors, golden light, and cozy outfits make every photo timeless. Here are simple tips to prepare your session.
Choose a color palette
Warm tones work best in autumn: beige, tan, brown, burgundy, mustard, olive, cream. Pick 2–3 colors and let each person choose clothes within that range.

Coordinate outfits (don’t match exactly)
Aim for a cohesive style: sweaters, scarves, jeans, boots. Mix textures and layers instead of identical outfits. Avoid heavy logos or neon colors.

Pick a meaningful location
Parks, trails, or a family-favorite spot make photos feel personal. I scout locations in St. Joseph and Kansas City to match your style and color palette.
Plan for golden hour (be on time!)
Late afternoon is ideal—the light turns soft and golden. Arrive a few minutes early so we don’t miss that glow. I’ll guide poses and prompts so you can relax and enjoy.
